Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: The youngest woman and youngest Latina to ever serve in Congress.

By Sailom Wongwatanasin

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, famously known as AOC, is a politician and activist who became the representative of New York’s 14th congressional district in 2019 as a member of the Democratic party. She is particularly recognized for her progressive and democratic socialist policies, advocating for initiatives like Medicare for All, and free public college, as well as her strong social media presence and outspoken approach in politics.

AOC's journey into politics traces back to her High School in the Bronx, where her passion for community activism began. This passion deepened during her college years at Boston University, where she pursued economics and international relations. During her time at BU, AOC took advantage of many opportunities, such as her internship with the late Senator Ted Kennedy, exposing her to the inner workings of politics.

The financial struggles her family was met with, along with her experiences in a diverse and economically disadvantaged community laid the foundation for her progressive political perspective. These early life experiences propelled her dedication to addressing income inequality, social justice, and advocating for marginalized communities.

AOC's political journey took off in June 2018 with her unexpected victory against incumbent Democrat Joe Crowley, a  pivotal moment in her career signaling the growing influence of progressive voices within the Democratic Party. Her subsequent win in the general election solidified her position as the youngest woman and Latina ever elected to Congress.

Despite her influence, AOC has faced criticism for the perceived radicalism of her policy proposals and her confrontational approach within the Democratic Party. Some argue that her positions may be too progressive for broader political consensus.

Recently, AOC has been calling out prominent republican political figures, such as Mike Johnson and Donald Trump,  for their role and opinions regarding Alabama’s new IVF ruling which “decided frozen embryos are children, and those who destroy them can be held liable for wrongful death” which traces back to the republican-favored ruling of overturning Roe v. Wade.

AOC's impact on American politics is evident in the shift towards more progressive policies within the Democratic Party. Her ability to mobilize young voters has contributed to a changing political landscape, influencing party discussions and priorities. Her influence demonstrates the role that the younger generation can have in directing the political landscape towards becoming more progressive.

It is without a doubt that she has made an impact on contemporary politics. While facing criticism, AOC's influence on policy discussions and her commitment to representing marginalized voices make her a key figure in shaping the future direction of American politics. To this day, she continues to use her growing platform to boldly name and spotlight questionable policies as well as public figures.
